Adding Widgets to Sidebar
February 26, 2016 at 7:08 am #4424
After a wide search I decided to use AccessShopLite for my Magento Store I am going to launch. Thanks for designing such a great theme. You documentation and support forum is also very extensive and self-explanatory. I have already customized many options in the theme after going through various topics in the forum.
I am stuck at adding widgets to the sidebars. I am trying to add widget instances using the standard method. I am creating a widget with CMS Static Block with Block Reference to Right Column. No matter where I assign that widget to display whether All CMS Pages or Specific pages, the widget never shows up in frontend. Hope I am doing everything the right way. Or is there any different way of adding widgets or static blocks to sidebar? I want to edit the banner in right sidebar of default home page. I tried but unable to find a way out.

Thanks for the response.
Isn’t it possible to add widgets in sidebar using the standard way of adding it in Magento right from the backend?
Also, while the site is being viewed on smaller display the sidebar appears before the main content. I think it makes better sense to show the main content first and then sidebar content. Like, when I view a category page, the Shop By layered navigation filters are showing up before the product catalog. Similarly on homepage, the right sidebar is showing before the homepage content.

Yes it is possible from backend you mean to write the xml?
Which is the way you are talking about? Let us check if that is not working?
Check this for changing sidebar and content position.

I understood the part where I can change position of sidebar and content position after reading another topic.
I want to know whether I can add widget instances to sidebars using the CMS > Widgets options and Block Reference. Because I am trying to do it but it is not working. I am not good in XML and it will be difficult for me to add static blocks manually in layout. I intend to add static blocks in sidebar using widget instance, but only using the Magento Admin interface, not by writing XML codes. Is it possible?March 2, 2016 at 4:50 am #4450
Yes that works fine.
May be you missed some steps.
Check this tutorial and try to follow the same:

Didn’t find the link resourceful. Here is what I am doing in Magento Admin Panel.
CMS > Widgets. Add Widget Instance, Type: CMS Static Block, Design: accessshop/default.
Name: XYZ, Sort Order: 0
Display On: Tried “All Product Types”, “Anchor Categories”, “Specific Pages”
Page (Dependant on Display On field): “All Products”, “All Categories”, “CMS Home Page” and “CMS Pages (All)”
Block Reference: Tried “Left Column”, “Main Content” and “Right Column”
No matter what combination I am using, the widgets are not appearing.March 2, 2016 at 6:39 am #4454
As per that link check the video also.
You must add the Layout at the bottom while adding widget instance and there you get to select the place to display.
It is working fine in our site.

Don’t see any video while visiting this link. http://magento.stackexchange.com/questions/41315/inserting-static-block-in-sidebar
I have added layout, here is a screen shot. https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=281341CB5868F815!85241&authkey=!ALHC01V6a-KEEXo&v=3&ithint=photo%2cJPG
I used Left Column, Right Column and Main Content in Block Reference.

There is one at the bottom.
Select to All Pages not All CMS Pages and try (2nd last on option select).

That’s what I tried. Here is a screenshot of one of the combination I tried. https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=281341CB5868F815!85242&authkey=!ADNs8W889PnLd58&v=3&ithint=photo%2cJPG
I tried a number of combinations to add widget instances, but no success. I have not even made any changes to the core files.

If you can provide us your site details then we could check.

The site is not live. Domain not linked yet. You have to modify C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts file in Windows OS to access it.
Will that be fine?
